Preparation and Research
Preparation is vital
- Experience has shown the better prepared you are for an interview, the chances of success are increased dramatically.
- Your first point of contact should be with your consultant who will be able to advise you on the ethos, philosophy, location and other background information of the company.
- You will need to research the company by using the library, websites and company literature.
- Make sure you have the correct information with regard to the interview such as the name of the company, date and time of the interview, interviewers name and title and finally address and telephone number. These should all be written down for reference.
- By going the extra mile you will demonstrate an impressive level of interest and create an excellent impression.
Planning Your Journey
- Plan your journey in advance and allow yourself an extra 20 minutes to spare. This will allow you time to collect your thoughts and relax.
- Remember always be polite and pleasant to other members of staff as they may well have an influence on the final decision.
- Also, organise your CV, references or certificates and make sure they are readily available for the interviewer.
First Impressions Count
- First impressions really do count. Are you looking your absolute best? Have you made every effort you possibly could? This will naturally enthuse your confidence and place you in a better frame of mind. By controlling and managing the impression you make, this will have a direct impact on your success at interviews.
- There is no excuse not to dress properly for interviews.
- Perfume and aftershave should be used in small amounts, if at all. If you wear jewellery, make sure it is kept to a minimum. Hairstyles and make up should be simple and natural.
- Do not wear overbearing colours especially socks, ties or scarves.
The Interview
- Be courteous, smile and shake hands firmly. Your overall posture, gestures and facial expressions will reveal a lot about you therefore, it is important to come across as enthusiastic, interested and alert. This will in turn create an overall good feeling to the prospective employer. The right attitude is very important to any organisation.
- Wait to be shown where to take a seat.
- Look the interviewer in the eye and smile when appropriate (a friendly disposition goes a long was but, always remain professional).
- If you are interviewed by more than one person, always look at and address the person who posed the question, then glance at the others as you are coming to the end of your answer.
- Compose yourself comfortably, don't fidget, and don't tap your feet or objects or sprawl.
- Most importantly have any mobile phones, pagers etc switched off before the interview.
Leave the remuneration package/benefits details to your consultant to discuss unless the information is offered. Negotiations will be made in your behalf.
The end of the interview
- At the end of the interview, don't let your guard down, you want the employer to continue viewing you positively so, thank them for the opportunity of the interview.
- Leave the room with any belongings and a firm handshake.
- Remain positive and enthusiastic at all times, reiterate at this point that why the job is of interest to you and why you want it.
